Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to sell part of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal values the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – a record for a Formula 1 squad – after the McLaren team was appraised at £3.5 billion in a change of ownership structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who holds one-third of Mercedes F1, plans to divest a stake in the region of five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team principal and CEO should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Breakdown

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos, who both hold one-third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We are providing no comment on the matter. The management structure of the team will remain unchanged, and each shareholder are dedicated to continued achievements of Mercedes-Benz in Formula One."

Financial Increase

The deal signifies a significant increase in worth of Mercedes F1 since Ineos acquired its share for £208 million in 2022.

The rise reflects the expansion in market values of Formula 1 outfits in the past few years as a consequence of the growing popularity of the sport globally.

This was also seen in the success of the F1 movie starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and has grossed over $630 million (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing movie and the highest-earning sports movie to date.

Present Standings

The Mercedes team are second in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren, with three races remaining in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has won two of the 21 races this year and is in fourth place in the individual standings behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team won a record eight straight team titles and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
