Pentagon Investigation Concludes Hegseth Put Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Pentagon review has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by sharing secret information in a private Signal group, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Event

The online conversation in dispute contained particulars about a planned airstrike in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This discussion was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other individuals in the chat allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Serious Risk to Forces

The internal investigation found that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the lives of US troops if it had been obtained by a hostile nation.

Notably, the report also noted that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the information he distributed, though it was not specified whether he formally exercised that authority.

Secretary's Response

The source indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed information that would not have risked lives or compromised the operation. He further stated that he had the right to downgrade information and viewed the inspector general to be partisan.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been provided to lawmakers. An unclassified version is expected to be made public in the coming days.
