Larian Studios Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The speculation around the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction implies that the team could be crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of specialized paths that are viable by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be approached in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
